WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?
As the School Counselor, I serve as a resource for students, families, teachers, administrators and staff. When a family is experiencing some sort of stress, I may assist in determining the needs of the child and family. I spend time getting to know the students by visiting the classrooms and sharing lessons with them. Typical lessons cover topics such as personal safety, expressing feelings, solving conflicts, showing respect for self and others and learning to deal with teasing and bullying.
Group Counseling
Sometimes students may benefit from a short term small group counseling situation. Many groups are formed throughout the year in order to meet the needs of our students. Small groups may focus on topics such as social skills, problem solving, communication skills, changing families, grief and self-esteem. Groups typically meet for 30 minutes one time per week for a 6-week cycle. The goals of small group counseling are for students to share their feelings in a safe place, to practice new skills with other students, and to have a more successful school experience.
Individual Counseling
Individual counseling may be provided on a short-term basis to students who are experiencing difficulties at home or in school. For example, I may meet with a student who is having difficulty making friends, is anxious about school work, is having conflict with peers, or has experienced the loss of a loved one or pet. Please note that school counseling is less intense than counseling provided by a counselor outside the school system. If you need help finding a counselor or other mental health care provider for your child or family, please contact me.
Family Assistance
I frequently talk to parents about issues concerning their children. I am available to discuss behavior issues, family issues, issues regarding illness and loss, moving transitions, and separation/divorce concerns. I am also able to provide information about community resources that may be available to you.
